I have the marriage of my 2xg grandparents John NATHAN and Sarah GREEN as August 20th 1846 at the great Synagogue. I have the book of the transcripts of the marriage registers so that's ok but, and this is the problem, I cannot find John NATHAN on the General Register Office (GRO) Index and I don't know which of the many sarah GREENs it might be because I don't know which registration district the Great Synagogue comes under - any suggestions?.
I had this silly idea that if I could find John's marriage on the GRO I could perhaps find his siblings marriages because the chances of them marrying in the same place - the mother stayed put for the next ten years - were good. Ho hum, back to the drawing board.

I don't know, but using a seach engine comes up with references to a Great Synagogue:
Fieldgate Street, East London
http://www.olamgadol.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/purim.html
and this mentions Bethnal Green Great Synagogue
http://www.jeffreymaynard.com/LSyn31EK.htm
Whilst this site gives an address for a Great Synagogue
http://www.brijnet.org/centralsyn/shul_history.shtml
Although the Community and a synagogue had already been in existence for fifteen years, it was in name and practice only a branch of the Great Synagogue, Duke's Place, in the parish of St. James's, Aldgate, in the City of London.

Duke's Place is THE Great Synagogue but which registration district is Dukes Place in?
There are umpteen NATHANs on the GRO - except my John - but the registration district is given as London and I have it in my mind that this means *the City* of London and then I confuse myself.

If there are still lingering doubts....
The appropriate parish is St James Dukes Place and the registration district is City of London/London City.

Thanks Peter,
The reason I confuse myself is that they lived in Southwark - St George the Martyr so I usually expect to see that in there somewhere but not for marriages obviously.
