Hi, im new so i apologise now if im asking stupid questions.
Im looking into the Oakes Family. They appear to of originated in Derby then moved to Riddings near Alfreton, They had their own buisness called James Oakes & Co and were very big in mining and ironworks, i have found lots of information and have the beginings of a tree, im looking for more relatives and to make sense of some the Oakes i have already found but cant tie in.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated
Thank you

Hi
Its not a stupid question, but in order to be able to help you , we need information.
Names for one, dates for another, and occupations always help.
If you can put them in a cetain place in one of the census years 1841-51-61-71-81-91-1901, then its reasonably easy to sort out who is who. Rough ages are also important

OAKES FAMILY
I am looking for information on James Oakes b.1778 in Somersall herbert & moved to Riddings. Wife Sarah Haddon? I am looking for information on his descendants. He is my grandmother's grandfather, and I want to fill in the gap with her father's information.
Any help gratefully received!

On IGI there is baptism for James Oakes christened 15 March 1778 at Somershall Herbert. Parents are George Oakes and Mary Yates. George and Mary married 17 Nov 1777 in Somershall Herbert.
I assume you have this.
1841 census for Alfreton at Ridings House there is James oakes age 50 iron proprietor with wife Sarah50 and children Sarah 25, James 25 Thomas 20 , Margaret 15 and 6 servants.
Even allowing for the 1841census age disparity(often not accurate)this James cannot be the one born 1778 who would by 1841 would be 63.
Here I leave it for the moment!

James Oakes
This is proving a little more complicated, than I thought! I think I may be mistaken about the Somershall Herbert link, as James's father was James, not George.
My James is the iron proprietor, but I would be interested if this other James could be linked in to the family.
Thanks for any update.
All the best
David

What was James OAKES age at death (presumably Jun 1845 Belper 19 296)?
What does the parish register have to say about the assumed marriage with Sarah HADEN?Peter Goodey

James & Dorothy
The only marriage for James and Dorothy on the IGI is this extracted record:
James Oaks m Dorothy Snape 30 MAY 1786 Weeford, Stafford, England . I have confessed often to being a bad geography student so I don't know if this a possibilty that might help you :-)
The IGI lists 4 children b to James and Dorothy (all christened at St Peters Derby, Derby, England)
Benjamin b 1789 St Peters, Derby, Derby, England d 24 12 1789
Mariann Chr 16 3 1791 St Peters, Derby, Derby, England
These 2 are not extracted record but the source is Batch Number: 7426710 Sheet: 34 Source Call No.: 0935197 Type: Film
Eliza Christening 29 JUL 1796 Saint Peter, Derby, Derby, England (an extracted record)
James
