Just started this interesting field of research, i'm new and need some pointers. Trying to find my great grandparents William Henry Lloyd married Harriet Aitken. I have located one son also William Henry Lloyd (my grandfather) born Newport 1905 - died 3 Dec. 1953. I have found one known address for them 21 Bristol street - Newport.

Welcome to the forum. First step is to ask all your living relatives for what they know of your family history & get copies of any birth, marriage, death certificates that the family may already have. Also any other family papers, letters, photos, etc. And write it down! I'm still trying to remember names my late father mentioned only last year. I was so sure I would remember them!

Occupations are very useful in Welsh research where such a limited range of surnames was used. All the locals will have known who "Jones the butcher, son of Jones the baker, son of Jones the candlestick maker" was, but you & I won't without a few more clues.

Can you give us more specific info, eg when were the family at Bristol St? Do you have the birth certificate for William Henry Lloyd? Have you found any of the family in the censuses yet?

Thankyou for your interest. I have found a birth cert for William jnr linking me to his parents but no sign of them on any census in the UK.

Welcome to this wonderful obsessi... hobby. Saying there is no sign of them on any census implies that you have searched all possibilities but having put William Lloyd - without the henry - into Ancestry for the 1901 census I am guessing that you have searched only for the full name and not looked at any variations.This is not unusual when we are just starting out. One of the first things we learn is that if there is a different way to spell things then the officials who recorded our ancestors will have used it

You don't say whether you have any family stories about where William Henry came from, or if you have his death certificate. The death cert. will give you an age at death, now this could be a bit wrong because it will be the age given by the person who registered the death but it does give you an approximate date to start looking.
This should give you a little to do in between the most important thing which is to contact all living relatives and start asking them specific questions about family stories, myths and legends. and as Wirral says write it ALL down even the stuff that couldn't possibly be useful because the bit you leave out will be the bit you need in five years time.
