As part of Nattional Library Week we can access the Times Digital Archive for FREE
http://trials.galegroup.com/nlw2006/history.html
and all the other databases that are available. We only have the whole of April to do this so make sure you bookmark it and then get searching.

Do you mean that you are getting less results? If so, have you made sure that the radio button is against 'in entire article content' and not the default 'in title, citation, abstract'?

Ladkyis, thanks for spotting that

Ed, the character recognition isn't always good, especially for early editions of The Times. Therefore, some things appear in Palmers that aren't picked up on in the digital recognition.
You need to be a bit sneaky with your research. I searched for the surname I was interested in. Then for variations using wildcards and the NOT option (so that all the original surname entries didn't come up).
Cheers
Sue

What a fantastic database.
Thanks very much for the tip off Ladkyis.
Managed to get some information that I thought would take ages searching for in a library somewhere.

Bedfordshire Libraries
You can also access via Bedfordshire Libraries, they have online membership open to anybody for free, you can even register if you live abroad. For people overseas if your zip code is one character short just insert a space.

Thanks Keith another good tip off.
Just checked my local Online library and able to access this through Waltham Forest, although it looks like you have to live, work or be educated in the area to join this one. They also have a lot of other stuff such as the Encyclopædia Britannica Online etc.

I think you will find, that if you are a member of your local library, you will be able to access the Times Index and various other volumes (I also have access to the Dictionary of National Biography)
If you go to your library web site (you can usually get there via your local council site), you should be able to access these indexes, etc., by entering your library card number.
Best wishes

Well, we live and learn all the time don't we Ann? I will have to give this a go, although knowing my luck, they won't have the links!!
