Could I please ask for some kind person to do a look up of the census at Shepton Beauchamp. I think that Benjamin died in the late 1840's Benjamin b c 1792 and Susannah c b 1797 but Susan lived untill 1871.

Benjamin/Susannah(susan)
Thank you for this lookup. Would any body have the 1871 census that could look to see who Susannah was living with, she died in October 1871 and is buried in Shepton Beauchamp.

1871 Shepton Beauchamp
William GARRET head mar 32 laborer
Miriam wife 24 glover ?Comfitern Somerset
Susan dau 2
Susan mother w 71 ??outdare houfier
I had huge trouble with the occupation - can't THINK what it could be!! The only possibility I could imagine was outdoor hosier, but someone else cleverer than me could possibly decipher it.
Sorry, forgot to take note of the references for someone else to look.

So it's not just me! I couldn't make anything in English out of the occupation either. This best I can do is RuAdaruHoufers. Not a common occupation in my neck of the woods, but maybe there are dozens of them in Somerset!
The reference is RG10/2402 folio 38 page 20 schedule 88. The odd thing is that the writing is fairly clear. Maybe the enumerator had a bit too much cider.

Susanannah Garrett
Thank you to both of you, but I have no idea what the occupation is. Can somebody help? May be the 1861 Census would help. Also can some body help me with why I can find both Benjamin and Susan in the burial register he in May1848 and her in Oct 1871 but they are not on free bdm, as I would like to get their death certificates.

Try ancestry for the (nearly) full BMD index. It is a Beta version that is free to access at the moment. The freebmd index is not complete yet.

Had another look at the 1871 image - looked on the next page and there are a lot of old people with the same 'occupation'. On second viewing it still looks like 'outdare'
, but the second word I'm pretty sure is 'Pauper' with an extremely fancy 'P'.
For the record: 1861 RG9/1633 Folio103 page17 Sch83
Susan GARRETT head 63 glover
William son u 23 ag lab
John son u 18 ag lab
George MALE sonlaw mar 24 ag lab
Jane MALE dau mar 26 glover
George MALE grnson 8m

Could an "outdoor pauper" be one who lives in what we would now term "the community", rather than one who lives in the workhouse?
