    Default TURLEY surname

Mary TURLEY married John STANYARD in St Peters, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, on 21.06.1836. Census records say she came from Ireland. I do not know the names of her parents, or when she emigrated to England. Any help re this would be greatly appreciated.

With Irish research it is really important to know the county and preferabley the parish your ancestor came from and also their religion. Do have any idea what part of Ireland Mary was from?

Unfortunately, I've no idea when or where she came from Ireland, or the names of her parents.

Well if you don't know where she is from it may be best to look at the incidence of the name Turley in Ireland. You could start with checking the Griffiths Valuation, this took place between 1848 & 1864. Doing a soundex search, you will get 6 results for Turly (none with an e) in the townland of Cloonakilleg, in the civil parish of Tisrara, in the Barony of Athlone in Co Roscommon. As there are no other results for the country this might be a good place to start. By the way the Griffiths Valuation in County Roscommon took place in 1857/8. This site also contains considerable amount of Roscommon data so worth investigating.

Although a bit later you may be also interested in looking at the incidence of the Turely name in births in 1890. If you use the search at https://www.ireland.com/ancestor/ you can see a map of Ireland plotting the births, showing the name as occuring most frequently in counties Down and Roscommon.

I have checked the coverage of the TURLEY surname and discovered that Armagh and Down have the most occurrences of that surname. Mary TURLEY got married in England in 1836, so not sure that data of the 1890s will be directly relevant.
