Hi from Australia
I am hoping that someone can assist me in finding information about an ancestor who was sentenced at the Manchester assizes around the 5/6 of Feb 1886. His name was Ambrose Tattersall 33 of Back Mitton Street Padiham, and he was sent to Dartmoor for the attempted murder of two women in Bolton.
He was up before Mr Justice Grantham.
I am interestd in the sentence records as he sailed to the USA in 1902!
Any assistance would be gratefully received.
Cheers
Janet

The records may be in the Archives here, or there should be a report in one of the local papers. He was given a life sentence for the murder of Grace Bradley.

Manchester Assizes Records
Hi UK
Thank you for your very speedy response! Sorry I should have mentioned that I do have an article from a Burnley newspaper - I was hoping to get something more official I suppose.
Can you suggest any searchable data bases where i may be able to gain more information?
Thanks again,
Cheers

Oooopps...that should have been attempted murders...of Grace Bradley and Emma Dalley. As the case was heard at the Manchester Assizes the records should be at The National Archive. There was a massive article about the case in the Manchester Evening News (3/2/1886) and the arrest even made The Times (4/12/1885). See the link below. I have posted a new thread about Court and Prison records for the Manchester area.
