Why thank you kindly, Sharron. I am on a 'roving commission' in Aceh, so I don't know how often I will be able to get to an internet cafe to do 'non-essential' internet stuff.
Down in that little corner of Devon, from Sidmouth across to Lympstone and up to Hemyock, anyone named Paver, Carter, Bridle, White, or Dyer is likely to have some sort of connection to me, seeing as how they intermarried quite frenetically over the years.
Thomas is a very common Carter name, which is a pity. Also a pity that Thumper hasn't a location displayed. If in Devon, a quick run down to Otterton to see Ros Hickman (OPC) could lead to a visit with a Carter gent who has a handwritten family tree laid out on what I understand to be the back of several rolls of wallpaper. (This may be an exaggeration in the reporting - I wasn't at the reunion.)

Of course. Here's an explanation using one of the census entries I gave you:

Thomas CARTER / head / M [married] / 35 [years] / Baker / Devon East Budleigh
Mary Do [= ditto, i.e., CARTER] / Wife / M [married] / 34 / [no occupation given] / Do [i.e., Devon] Exmouth
Louisa CARTER / Daur [Daughter] / S [single] / 9 / Scholar / Devon Exmouth
William Do [CARTER] / Son / 3 / Do Do [i.e., Devon Exmouth]
George Do [CARTER] / Do [son] / 10mo [10 months] Do Do [Devon, Exmouth]
I have given you literal transcriptions in all my messages -- just as the enumerator has written it down. So "Do" which stands for ditto, always means the same as whatever is written in the column on the line immediately above. Sometimes " is used for the same purpose.
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
HTH [Hope this helps!]

Finding out Information
Look at http://www.genuki.org.uk/gs/ although it is easly to get overwhelmed by this site all of the basic information is there.
Start with the section "Getting Started in Genealogy and Family History"
Rod Neeps site
http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/index.htm offers a good summary and is an effective guide.
The rest comes with practice and experience but as in all things no matter how experienced you think you are there is always something new to learn.

Any idea how old Bertie was in 1916? He may have been born after the 1901 census. I don't see a suitable match on the census or in the birth index. Do you have any other information from the marriage certificate?
