Hello Thumper,
How's Bambi?
Do you have any approximate dates of birth for your family?

Thumper, you might be some sort of rellie of mine. My Carter people are from around Newton Poppleford/Otterton. An occasional poster, "Cuddles", is also a Carter descendant, and she lives in that area still. A Carter family reunion was recently held in Otterton. The OPC of Otterton attended, so you might try contacting her (sorry, don't have contact info to hand).

Thumper,
Was Thomas Carter married to someone else before Sarah Ann? There's the following entry in the 1891 census:
RG12/1675 Folio 75 Page 74 and 75
Imperial Rd, Littleham, Exmouth, Devon
Thomas CARTER head M 35 Baker [born] Devon East Budleigh
Mary Do Wife M 34 [born] Do Exmouth
Louisa CARTER Daur S 9 Scholar [born] Devon Exmouth
William Do Son 3 [born] Do Do
George Do Do 10mo [born] Do Do

It looks like Thomas CARTER is living with his wife's family, The HOMANS, in the 1881 census -- RG11/2138 Folio 19 Page 12.
And there just happens to be a marriage record which matches this census entry:
Name: HOLMAN, Mary Jane
Record Type: Marriages
Quarter: September
Year: 1877
District: St. Thomas
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 94
Possible matches for a bridegroom include a Thomas Voysey CARTER.

And a marriage record for Thomas and Sarah Ann:
Name: CARTER, Thomas Voisey
Record Type: Marriages
Quarter: June
Year: 1898
District: St. Thomas
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 147
Possible matches for a bride include a Sarah Annie KELLY.

Record Type: Deaths
Age at death: 40
Quarter: September
Year: 1896
District: St. Thomas
County: Devon
Volume: 5b

Thumper, the Carter family is thick on the ground all through East Budleigh and that general area. Families of up to a dozen children are not uncommon, so the descendants are myriad. Looking through the names and places submitted by other posters is a walk down a genealogical memory lane. St Thomas, for starters, refers to the parish in Otterton.
I am busy packing for a 3 month trip away, and I wish I could devote a bit more time to tracking down our possible connection. If you contact me by email before wednesday morning, I can send you a Carter list and the contact details for Cuddles.
