    Default Street name change?

    Hello again,

Would anyone know if Newburgh Street in Manchester still exists? Or perhaps the name been changed? I found family at 21 Newburgh Street on the LDS 1881 census index, but cannot find the street on any of the online maps.

Any insight into its location now or then would be greatly appreciated.

    Kay,

go to the neighbours view and scroll through to find adjacent streets, that usually gives you a good idea of location.

No it does not exist as Newburgh St and I don't think that you will find it on any of the early Alan Goddrey maps as it does not appear to have been built till some time after 1871.If you have access to M&S TDs you may be able to see when it vanished.

    Default Street name change?

    John and UK,

Thanks to each of you for your reply to my inquiry about Newburgh Street.

John: I did try your suggestion and scrolled through "next household" and "previous household" on the LDS 1881 census index. "Next households" lived on Dyson Street, Steele Street, and Wragby Street. "Previous households" lived on Barwick Street, Sheridan Street, and Elias Street. None of them could be found on online maps.

UK: I'm not familiar with M&S TDs. Could you tell me what it is?

Once again, thanks for you kind help.

I've found Newburgh St and Elias St on an old map. They are just north of Miles Platting station (or junction of Oldham Rd and Queens Rd). Newburgh St is possibly present day St Augustine St. I don't know this part of Manchester. Has it been redeveloped anyone know?

    Sorry,

M&S TD...Manchester & Salford Trade Directory. According to the 1881 Census returns Newburgh St was in the St George's District in the area of Newton Heath. If the St Augustine's Street you mention was next to Lodge St, then it was still about 11 years ago as I knew someone who lived there. I have the feeling that it has now been demolished.

    Default Street name change?

    Hello skb2 and uksearch,

Thanks for the additional insights. My family lived in the Angel Meadow area between 1841 and 1894. I have the impression that Miles Platting is not so far away. Am I right?

I'm getting a little confused with all these streets that seem to exist no longer. I ordered an 1849 Alan Godfrey map a couple of weeks ago, so maybe I will be able to figure it out myself when it arrives.

Thanks again to everyone for your kind help.

Default A bit of news for you.

Hi, just incase you were still making enquiries regarding Newburgh St, Miles Platting, it changed its name to Ollerton Street. That's probably why you can't find it. Like a previous post said though, they were demolished. My Dad used to live on Ollerton Street, but moved from there in the late 50's, and most of his family lived around the same area, Hayden Street, Baguley Street etc. Apparently, some of the original street names were german names, but these were changed after the war.

    Best regards,

    Tom.
