    Question 32nd Foot France

My 4x Great Grandfather James Battersby fought at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. While he was stationed there my 3x Great Grandfather William was born in 1815 and on census records is shown as a British Subject France. I have no idea where to obtain his birth certificate. My 4xGreat Grandfather was born in Amersham Buckinghamshire and my 2x Great Grandfather was born in Amersham. How can I find my 3x Great Grandfather's registration of birth?

There are two sets of indices that you can check, both can be found on the pay-per-view web-site 1837online - or may also be seen at the FRC in London and at many County Record Offices/Local Studies Libraries around the country.

    Check
Indexes to Regimental Registers of Births 1761-1924

    and

Index to Army Chaplains' Returns of Births 1796-1880

If you find an entry, you can order a copy of the relevant certificate from the GRO.

    Lightbulb Thank you

Thank you Geoffers for your suggestions. I have a subscription to 1837 online but I did not know where to look. I will get busy at once.
