1841 census lookup, please

Hello, I'm looking for information on a Joseph Wild, he would be about 19 at time of the cesus. He was a wool sorter in 1844 at time of marriage, in Bradford. His fathers name was John Wild, he was a spinning master.

This isn't going to be easy unless you can provide more information. As far as I know, the only index to the 1841 census for Bradford is the Bradford FHS one, which is surnames only. It's in 13 parts (each of which would need to be checked), and WILD is a common enough name to appear quite a few times in each part. So you could potentially be asking someone to find around 100 references or more, and then look them up on the census images.

Does the 1844 marriage certificate give an address or area, or the name of a church? Any (or all) of these might narrow down the area enough for a look-up and search to be a more reasonable proposition.

Arthur, they where married in St Peters Parish Church, no address was given, just Bradford. I'll have to order some LDS films and see if anything turns up.

Sorry if I was a bit negative yesterday - but the thought of you ploughing through the whole of Bradford inspired me to do a bit of digging.

First I was going to refer you to the Bradford FHS for details of their census index. However, when I got there it reminded me that they have a list of which name appears in which volume, and a check for WILD showed that it wasn't by any means as common a name as I'd thought. So, using the volume numbers given and my fiche copy of the index, I came up with just 10 entries, which I was able to check fairly quickly on a CD set.

The bad news, though, is that I didn't see Joseph. There were some possible Johns - one aged "40" (i.e. 40-44) in Manningham, one aged "40" in Wilsden (which in 1844 was a separate parish), and one aged "30" in Bradford.

My second suggestion, which still stands, was that you go to The Genealogist where, contrary to what I said yesterday, there is an alternative index to 1841 for Yorkshire, and (I think) links to images. Here you might find Joseph, and you could possibly check whether any of the Johns is correct. You have to pay to use this site, but there are a variety of pricing options. I haven't used it myself so can't vouch for the accuracy of the index, but the site is run by a company which produces census CD sets which are generally of a pretty good quality, so legibility shouldn't be a problem.

Arthur, thank you for taking the time to look. I'm in the US, so most of my research is through the LDS and posting querys on web sites. The John in Bradford looks promising, I'll have to send for the parish records from St. Peters and see if there is any other information I can use.

The address was Springfield Place, Manningham - from surrounding entries it looks to have been in the Four Lane Ends (Whetley Lane/Thornton Road) area. I found a Springfield Place on a modern map, but I don't think it's the same. And the all-important reference: HO107/1297/2 ED4 fo12 p16.
