Red face Stoke on Trent directories - a favour

Would anybody out there with access to the Hanley, Stoke on Trent directories for 1890/1891 be able to do me a favour, please?

At the time of the 1881 census, James Harvey was living with his wife Patience and their family at 31 Albion Street, Hanley.

James' death was registered in the first quarter of 1891.

At the time of the 1891 census, Patience was living with her family at 18 George Street, Hanley.

I am interested in knowing what James' occupation was at the time of his death.

Do you have reason to believe that James had an occupation which would be listed in a directory? If you don't get a response from someone who has access specifically to a 1891 directory for Hanley, you can try searching historical directories online at http://www.historicaldirectories.org.

    Good luck!

    Hi Trish,

Thanks for that. I've gone on the site and it actually works! I never had much luck with it previously. It always seemed slow, even when viewed on a broadband connection, and then it would crash, and then I would throw the computer across the room and get a large glass of wine!

I've had a quick look. I may seem a bit dense, here, but from a quick look, they seem a bit different from the Liverpool and Birkenhead directories I'm used to. As well as the familiar Yellow Pages-style layout at the back of the book, the main entries are by street name, and will list the head of the household. For instance, that was how I knew that George Croxon, who was only a carter working for someone else, was living at 20 Dover Street, Birkenhead in 1896.

Are not all directories the same?
