Forum: Navigating Brit-Gen

If you have any problems posting a query, or just need to ask a question or two about finding your way around the forum, this is the place to do it.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: If you have arrived via FWR forum links

If you've come to us via the FWR forum links, please take a look at Sue's sticky (ie fixed at the top of a forum) message that you reach by clicking HERE. It explains how the British Genealogy Forum works. I would also add to what Sue says that you can often find useful information by looking at...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Helping us to help you

If you're new to internet forums, I hope that this note will provide help in avoiding some of the common pitfalls in writing your queries. We often see messages saying something along the lines of: "I'm looking for my Grandfather, Kermit Macmuppet". For obvious reasons, it'll be pretty...

You can now upload images directly to your posts as follows: 1a. While writing/editing your post, click the "Insert Image" button 1b. On the popup you'll see an empty box, a "Browse" button, plus "Upload" and "Cancel" buttons 2a. Click "Browse" and you'll see a second popup showing...

  4. Red face Sticky Thread Sticky: How to use Photobucket

This is what I do: (1) register at www.photobucket.com (it's free). (2) upload your photo to the site. (3) once it's uploaded, you'll see 4 little boxes underneath. (4) click in the bottom box (which auto-copies the link into your clipboard) (5) paste (Ctrl+v) into your forum posting. Voila!...

  5. Sticky Thread Sticky: Customising your Forum Options

Many newbies (and I suspect a lot of not so newbies) will have happily chugged along using the Forum Default Settings and will never have clicked on General Settings, located in the Forum Actions menu on the blue banner at the top, just below the tree. It is well worth clicking General Settings....

  6. Sticky Thread Sticky: Updating and Linking to Old Threads

Posting duplicate threads about the same person/family on different boards is not allowed, as it leads to confusion and duplication of effort, and such duplicate threads will be closed or deleted by the moderators. However, there has been a spate recently of members trying to re-visit brick...

  7. Sticky Thread Sticky: The Blue Banner at the Foot of the Screen

As I have had to use it twice this morning, once to get a link to the British-Genealogy pages and once to get a link to the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), I thought I would draw new members' attention (possibly also the odd long standing member ) to the Blue Banner that is always at the foot of...

  8. Sticky Thread Sticky: What is a Sticky??

As you navigate your way around the various forums, you will find that some of them are labelled Sticky. This means that, no matter how many posts are made on that forum, these particular posts will always remain at the top. Most of the Stickies contain very useful information which members may...

Oops another question that I should be able to work out but it is a lot easy to understand if you ask:redface: Is there any easy way of searching as when you put a common name in ie Mary Smith it comes up with lots of Marys and Smiths and takes me ages to go through them. There must be others...

I carefully composed my message then clicked on submit, only to be told it was not accepted and I lost the lot...very frustrating...it said to log in...but I had already logged in earlier. I don't understand what went wrong so thought I would try a little message here and see if it works this time.

  10. Posts tally-er

Being so close to posting 200 posts, I seem to be stuck on 199. When I noticed that I was close I was on 198, it took 2 or 3 posts to move up to 199 and after 4 or 5 subsequent posts, I seem to be stuck on 199. Is this just happening to me? Why can't I break the 200 barrier? Mods can you shed some...
