Forum: IGI

Information about the International Genealogical Index (IGI).

  1. Arrow Sticky Thread Sticky: The IGI - some clarification - please read

The IGI is an index of the ordinances (baptism, sealing & endowment) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and when used as such is 100% accurate. It is not an index of parish registers even though genealogists use it as such. Hopefully, this explanation of the information that...

  1. England Has Disappeared!

I have just gone to look at the England Births and Baptisms on Family Search and have scrolled down the European Collections page only to discover that all the England collections are missing. Can someone else take a look please and confirm that they really have disappeared!

  2. New(ish) Version of FamilySearch

Does everyone like this new version, or is it just me that has trouble? Even with the advanced search option I seem to get loads of results that I don't want. For instance I might want a birth/baptism record and amongst some baptisms I get census from various years. I have a subscription to FMP...

  3. Identifying church

Is it possible to identify which church IGI records relate to? I've found an entry for a baptism in Rye in 1881, but I can't find a way of seeing where the baptism took place. Is one to just assume it was the parish church? I'm guessing there is more than one possible church in Rye? David

Seems to be down today (Link to FS not working) - does anyone know if this is temporary or something to do with the new Family Search site?

  5. Confusion

I have been trying to find the parents of one Richard POTER or POTTER and have two IGI references that I don't understand. One states that he was born 'about 1714 ... of Stretton' and the spouse's name is 'unavailable'. (Ref 537960) That leads to 'endowments for the dead, 1877-1970' etc. which...

  8. Question Submitted Parish Record on the IGI

There are on Family Search, a batch of submitted parish record marriages from St. Mary at Lambeth which have neither a specific date or bride's surname. I cannot find the marriage it lists on Ancestry parish records so am dubious it exists. It's a marriage of a John Jones to Sarah 1792 St. Mary...

  10. A Bit Of A Puzzle

I have just found 2 baptismal records on the Record Pilot for a distant cousin, and am confused. The first is for Thomas Bengough, son of Thomas Bengough and Elizabeth, baptised 9 October 1829 at Aston Juxta Birmingham . The 2nd record is dated 19 Oct 1829 and at first sight would appear to...

  16. missing from IGI

Hello, forgive my ignorance but a couple of years ago on the IGI I found some extractions from parishes. I checked them again a couple of months ago to see if I could glean any further info from them and lo and behold they seem to have disappeared, is it possible? - they were there before

  18. Not in the IGI? Try FreeReg

This has probably been said before, but it may be worth saying it in the IGI part of the forum: Let's suppose you have found your ancestor's christening in the online IGI, as an "extracted record"--that is, a transcription of a Parish Register. (There will be a "Batch Number" below, probably...

  19. Inaccuracy

As has often been mentioned, submitted entries can be unreliable. I found a great one today. A marriage was recorded where the bride's name was given as "Briton Ferry" - this was (according to the Pallot's entry) the place of residence of the groom and not the bride! |laugh1| Unusually for a...
