  2. How to make contact with a resident owner?

As some of you know, my family and I are visiting England this summer. For me, it will be my 1st time back in 50 years. One of the places I want to show my wife, daughter and son-in-law, is the house I was born in. Since I don't know who the current owners are, I sent a letter addressed to the...

  3. I wonder WHY?

I really enjoyed the Person-to-Person board, but in the last month, I've noticed no messages to announce birthdays or other special occasions for our members Can the few volunteer moderators that we have left not start this again, or should I add the suggestion to Competitions board that it be...

  4. And we think we're so clever ...

Modern internet users often use -) and -( to express their feelings, and I'm sure we all think we're being innovative. Here's a questionnaire from 1917, re a soldier who shot himself: Q3: Location, nature and severity of wounds A3: Self inflicted wound in temple resulting in death. Q4:...

  5. Emails to posters

Until recently, posters on the forum would receive an email when an answer had arrived for their post. has this custom been discontinued or did I break some-thing?

  6. smiley lingo

On a perfect day, wouldn't it be nice to have an icon-ictionary to tell us what the little blighters mean? other than the obvious with more or less English names. Then when we know what we are using, have them arranged in the order most frequently used instead of having to scroll forever to find...

  7. Re-posted/repeated threads.

It would seem like a good idea, having read apost to then do a search to see if it's a repeat of a previous post--NOT !!. Time's too short, & there'd be no time left for anything else. Had I been wise enough to look HERE before I leapt in a mad dash to HERE I may have also been able to...

  8. WO 363 - "The Burnt Records" - FUL

Phew! You will all, I'm sure, be delighted to know that I've got to the end of the FUL section of the above records - what Ancestry call "WW1 Service Records". I have looked at every one of the 30,136 pages - some are repeated, some are illegible, many are out of order ... but the stories are...

  9. Family Reunion

Yesterday my Cousin Sandy came to visit --- From Arizona!!!! Well, she didn't come just to see me. Her mom lived up the valleys and she was getting very frail so Sandy and her husband came over for what they thought would be the last time. My lovely aunty died just the day after they arrived. So...

  10. Oh for an ancestor like this

:willy_nilly: Why is it that when all my ancestors begat a child out of wedlock, if the parish register says anything, its "bastard" or "illegitimate", but then someone else's has: An illegitimate child begotten as she avows by Cornelius Bradbury an Officer of Excise at this time living in...

  11. Transcription Howlers

We have, or will all come across these, but today I have found a whole new set. Whilst looking for a particular baptism, I was astonished to see as a possible "Thomas Bastard Devereux", in the transcription list and thought, "surely not - they couldn't have .... could they?" But yes they...

  12. British phone directories

Hello, I live in Canada and would like to try and make contact with relatives in England. Is there a phone directory with addresses that's available on line, that I don't have to pay for. In Canada we have one, but the only ones I can find for the UK are pay per view. Many thanks Gerald

  13. Advertising on paid for genealogy sites

I subscribe to a well known and normally well run subscription genealogy site. However these days every time I use it a banner advert pops up on the Home page. Mostly I ignore them but increasingly I get one telling me that I may have won a very valuable prize. My view is that this kind of thing is...

  16. The Old Grape Vine at Hampton Court

Trawling as I am through the WW1 Service Records, I get drawn into the stories ... but this one has me baffled! What looks like a letter, written by the soldier whose file it is in (Sydney John Fullagar), dated 17 April 1916: "Mr Harcourt's "sideline" So Mr Lewis Harcourt - in addition to...

  17. Ancestors siblings (vital to research them).

A few years back I often just traced my "directs" but I since learned to appreciate my ancestors brothers and sisters, and even first cousins. To me they are also ancestors but "collateral ancestors" not direct ones. I have several ancestors brother and sisters who emigrated to America inbetween...

Last week I was contacted through this site by a relative who's dad and grandparents I knewmany years ago.
