Forum: Non Conformist Records

  1. Strange detail in burials at Cross Street, Manchester

Thanks to a certain online subscription site, it is now possible to view the original registers of Cross Street Unitarian Chapel in Manchester, for which I am eternally grateful after struggling with the often illegible MF at Manchester Library. However, yesterday I found an ancestor's burial...

  2. Unhappy Baptist records for Surrey and Middlesex

Where would I start looking for Baptist records in Surrey and Poplar and Deptford in the late 1700's and early 1800's? I was emailed a link to the Poplar Chapel...it was Baptist and demolished after WWII. All these years, I have been searching the C of E and now they might be Baptist.

  5. Spurgeon's Tabernacle

A family story refers to a great uncle who was a lay preacher: apparently he visited the family when my father was a little boy some time in the 1920s (they lived in Blackfriars, SE London), because he was going to preach at a nearby Spurgeon's Tabernacle that day. Would some erudite soul know...

Hi all This is going to sound REALLY dumb. I have an ancestor who, in 1835 was baptised in St John Evangelist in lambeth, Surrey. Were children normally baptised under their mother's religion or did that not matter? It may explain why I have not been able to find any details on the...

  7. Question Were they Baptists or Not?

I apologise beforehand for the length of this request for assistance; can anyone explain the confused religious beliefs I seem to have uncovered. My 5th great grandfather had 13 children. The first 3 (born between 1761 and 1764 were baptised at the Parish Church in Normanton on Soar around the...

  9. What Exactly Is A Circuit?

I have relatives possibly baptised in the Ely Wesleyan Circuit (Cambridgeshire), and I'm trying to understand what a "Circuit" is. Is it a bit like a Parish, and if so, was it likely to have it's own chapel? Thanks, Brenda

  11. Help to pin-point birth place - Scotter or Appleby?

What other documents can I research inorder to prove where my Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather William RICHARDS' parents actually lived around the time of his birth? Could his parents have been non-comformists even in this time frame of 1798? I really want to be sure I'm researching the correct RICHARDS'...

  15. Quaker monuments

Hello, I have 2 branches of the family who were quite well off and were Quakers. We searched in vain for their grave stones in a very overgrown cemetery which we thought was the most likely place they were buried. We had previously found out that Quakers don't have large gravestones as they don't...

  16. Question Wesleyan baptisms, marriages and burials

Do Wesleyan registers exist? I'm missing alot of baptisms of ancestors and they do not appear to be in their parish church registers. Many of their parents were married in the parish church with only one or two isolated cases marrying in their local chapels. Was it frowned upon not to baptise?...
