  1. Wink Sticky Thread Sticky: Mining disaster index

Hi all, I don't know if anone has seen this before but if you haven't there is a searchable index. It 's good for doing a "one name study" like me or if you have mining ancestry. The person I found came from Frome in Somerset & was not Welsh. http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/site/home/ Cheers....David...

  2. Timberman in a Copper Mine

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Precinct 34, Silver Bow, Montana, lists a 55 year old man as a Timberman in a Copper Mine. In the 1900 census he was just listed as a Miner. Due to his age, I wonder if he was no longer 'fit' to work in the mine and was now used as a labourer to cut the timber...

  4. Miners' union?

My grandfather was a coal miner up until around the 1920s, I believe, where he left the Trehafod area for Somerset, after "trouble" with the union. At least that is the story, but I would like to know more. Can someone give me an idea which union he may have been a member of?

  6. Miners Accident Hospital

On the 1881 Census there is an Alexander POTTER 16, a 'driver in iron mines', born Middlesbrough, a patient at the Miner's Accident Hospital, Guisbrough, Yorks. He is not mentioned on the Mining Disasters Index. I am wondering how he got to be a patient there - and if he survived. Can anyone...

  7. What was a 'doriboy'?

I'm not sure if I've read this correctly - maybe not as I can't find anything when I've tried a general internet search. In the 1891 Wales Census RG12; 4451; 99; page 53 it looks like 15 year old Florance Horgan was employed as a 'doriboy' in a coalmine. What would his job have been?

My great grandfather, John Cooper (1887 - 1953) was a colliery manager at a number of mines in the Durham area. I had always heard the family say that he was fairly well known, and had written a number of books/articles on mining, though I've never been able to prove/disprove that. His last...

  15. W Stanley Pit, County Durham. General Strike.

I have read that not all mine owners in County Durham locked their miners out at the start of the General Strike in 1926. Some collieries may have continued to work. My late grandfather worked as an "engineman" at West Stanley at that time. The pit was owned by the Burns family and was sometimes...
