Forum: Acronyms and Abbreviations

Acronyms and abbreviations you may come across during your family history research.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Chapman Codes

You will notice that Chapman Codes have been added to the county forum titles. Chapman Codes were devised by Colin Chapman and relate to pre 1974 UK counties. Many researchers use place codes such as: Harrow MDX and Exeter DVN etc to clearly identify places. This is particularly useful where...

  2. Question hypothetical baptism?

We have been searching for the birth or baptism of illegitimate Andrew Andrews, believed to be the son of Ann born in either London or Devizes (there is some confusion in the census returns) in 1844. Our attention was brought to a baptism record in 1852 in Devizes that appears to be correct but...

  6. I.M.

I am ashamed to say that this came from my supposedly well-educated nephew, regarding three obituaries that he had come across: "...I think they were all written by someone in the family, because although they don't give an actual name, they all have the same initials at the end - I.M. I can't...

  7. CHR and BAP

Does any one know the difference between the two? These are examples of what the register contains. The birth date is obvious and the registration is The Stamp Duties Act of 1783 to raise monies to pay for the American War of Independence. I have no idea why there is a christening and a baptism....

  14. Harry

Dumb question probably. My grandfather was a Harry - registered as such, married as such, died as such, etc. There's no question he was ever anything else, or that Harry was just a familiar form of his "real" name. Now of course I know that Henrys were also often known as Harry. But what...

Hi All, I'm new to this by a matter of days so please bear with me. On the 1901 census form, in the final column (deaf, dumb etc.), is the abbreviation UX.
