  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Questions on military matters

Please give all the details on medal cards & attestation papers, instead of just what does Rtd i/c mean. A lot of military jargon can be interpreted from what the whole says, not just a couple letters.

I shall preface my remarks with the statement that - I know very little, and what I do know comes, unfortunately, from a dubious source. The story is that my grandfather (John STEWART, PoB: Peebleshire, Scotland) served in France at the very end of the WW1. In fact fighting may have just...

  8. The Navy List, August 1914

I picked up an old copy of the Navy List dated August 1914. It lists Officers and some senior Warrant Officers, seniority, ships and other odd bits and pieces. Many Libraries and record offices will keep a partial run of the Navy List, but it isn't always possible for everyone to get there. ...

  18. How were soldiers paid?

Hi, This may seem an odd question, but I was wondering how the families of serving soldiers got access to the pay of their husbands when they were away from home? In the days before bank accounts and cheques would they have to go to the regiment ?
