Has anyone any idea what this would be? I seen a couple of people (male and female) described as this in a parish register from the early part of the 1800s.

  3. Were these actual jobs?

In looking at census returns (1881 in this case) I see that it often happens that a person's occupation is listed as, for example, Farmer's Wife/Son/Daughter. I suppose it is implicit that such a person was working on the family farm. Today I came across a widow whose occupation was Threshing...

  5. Journeyman Letterpress Printer

A great grand uncle died in his early twenties in 1889 - he was a journeyman letterpress printer. What did that job entail? I can find the odd fleeting reference on Google but can't seem to find anything more specific.

  15. Odd jobs

I am now the proud owner of an original edition of Pigot's 1828-9 directory for London and am getting hours of fun from browsing. It's so much easier to browse in a real book than in an online one, especially with my not-so-broad-band internet access. Here are some of the more unusual jobs I've...

  16. How do I interpret this occupation?

I have a father-of-the-bride who is described as a 'Warehouse Walker Fancy Trade' in the 1891 census. Firstly would a warehouse walker be the equivalent of a picker and packer today, does anybody know, and secondly, what exactly does the 'fancy trade' cover? In a previous census (1871) he was a...

  19. Keeping Birds

I know this may seem a silly question but it is bothering me! I have relatives in Somerset in the mid 1800's, they were poor people, the husband worked as a Hay Cutter and they had a large family. Through newspaper articles I have built quite a picture of this colourful family. One touching one...
