Well i could not find him on the medal roll as apparently everybody got one . 1n the 1841 census jane born approx 1778 is indeed from scotland.and i did no more for 10 years. But recently i found Two lots of his records on find your pastand these show that he was in the peninsular wars in the 43rd monmouth reg from 1800 to1813 . He also got a medal and a clasp for Vimeiro. also revealed was the fact that he was previously in the Windsor foresters from1794 to 1800 and they were stationed in Scotland (Perth barracks and Montrose have been mentioned) If any one knowsany thing more i would be Greatfull Especially Jane's Surname or more about John Parr.Shame he just missed his waterloo.

"The garrison provost-sergeant will perform such garrison duties as may be directed by the officer commanding. He is subject to any garrison orders, visit canteens, repress irregularities, and clear the barracks and military premises of loose and/or disorderly characters. He will at all times avoid coming into personal collision with soldiers."

I think it is for a sample of handwriting for his transfer to the Dragoons.

Isn't it SAD? His story, the officer/private prejudice ... the whole thing!

The last bit of the last word kind of curls downwards and the photograph has been cut so the very last bit has disappeared off the edge of the card.

I know that he - Pt Dennis GIBBON - was in India and Burma during WW2 and I have it in my mind that he was with Ord Wingate and the Chindits (My Dad talked more about what his brothers did than what he did).

I really struggle with the National Archives search engine and I have never yet found anything on my own, as Peter Goodey and others will testify. Could someone give me a bit of a start please? a simple URL to point me in the right direction... or even the right words to search with would be so helpful.

I don't suppose he did anything spectacular just kept his head down and got home safely but it would be good to be able to write about him in the family newsletter so that his sons will know a bit more as he died when they were quite young.

My g grandfather, James Webster, born 1835 in Longton, Lancs., was in the India Army and then transferred to the British Army, 66th Regiment of Foot. I have the WO97 file from findmypast. His service period was 1858 to 1878. Luckily or unluckily, James was progressively more ill as he served in India and because of this his records are extensive.
I came across a Henry Webster in the same regiment about the same time. I also printed his documents. James had a brother Henry and I am trying to connect this Henry from the 66th with the brother. The WO97 documents are not as complete as those for James, just seem to be a long string of infractions.
I have the family in Preston on the 1841 and 1851 Census and James and his family in Preston in 1881 after discharge til his death in 1884. No sign, yet, of Henry after the 1851 Census.

What clues do I look for in the WO97 documents that I may have overlooked or not know about?
Also, we are visiting friends in England this summer and will be 20 minutes from The Wardrobe Museum. I plan an investigative trip there also. What should I be looking for in their records?
Also, there is no mention of a wife in James records. Is this standard? Or am I maybe missing some form/document that I should be looking for?

Thanks

I have recently received the service record of my father, Philip Potter No 5563348 of the Wiltshire Regiment. He was shown as being transferred to Army Reserve B on pay on 11th March 1925 after service which began on 20th August 1919. He was re-engaged on 20th August 1931 and discharged on termination of engagement on 19th August 1935. The service record I have obtained does not show any details of this re-engagement other than the dates. What I am trying to discover is whether or not there was a specific reason for his re-engagement and where he was likely to have served. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
