I am trying to find information on the origins of my second great grandmother, Robina Esther Crowsen. One consistent bit of information that I have is that she was born in England and that her parents were Scottish (per the 1920 U.S. census). In addition, I found a travel record (New York Passenger List, 1820-1957) listing her arrival in New York on Aug. 16, 1913 from Liverpool and indicating that she was born in Dover, England abt. 1872. Robina often appears as "Robina", "Helena" or "Lena" in various census / arrival records as well as in the birth records of her two sons, Charles Lithgow Pearce and George Enbro Tarbutt Pearce, who was born in Jamaica in 1893 and 1892, respectively. What is consistent in almost all of the records is the presence of one or both of her sons as residents in the household, at least up until about 1920. On both of these birth records, her maiden name of Crowsen is listed and consistently spelled.

Robina married George Edgar Radcliffe ("GER") Pearce, a civil servant in Jamaica, in Dec. 1890. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a record of their marriage. She moved with her husband and sons to New York City around 1905 and died in New York in 1929, where she is listed as Robina Esther Pearce. There is no information for her parents on the death certificate.

I believe that she was well educated, earning a living in the US as a music tutor, and she was also elected as a member of the Institute of Jamaica in 1895 (appearing as Mrs. GER Pearce), an organization focused on "the Encouragement of Literature, Science and Art in Jamaica". Unfortunately, I do not have a record of her arriving in Jamaica and research on the Crowsen name in Jamaica has not provided me with any additional information.

Finally, through my grandmother's recollections, Robina's parents died when she was young and she was raised by a wealthy aunt and uncle who died either during or before WWI and left their estate to help finance Britain's WWI efforts against the Germans. I find this last bit of information hard to believe and somewhat contrived, but I have been unable to uncover any information to prove otherwise. She was clearly educated and, looking at a picture of her from 1890-1891 (when she would have been 18 or 19), she presents a confident, refined demeanor.

I have spent several years trying to uncover her parents names looking at English, Scottish and Jamaican records, without success and her apparent willingness to change first names opens up the possibility that, perhaps, Crowsen is not her true maiden name.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello! I posted on here a year or more ago as I'd hit a brick wall with my mum's family tree. I think I may have got a little further but cannot find any documentary evidence to support my theory!

To explain (sorry if it goes on a bit!) my mother’s father was William James PETERS. His birth certificate states that he was born 02/11/1898 in Cheltenham Union Workhouse. His mother was Clara PETERS (charwoman), which is all the information I have as to who his mother is.

On the 1901 census (Detail: Class: RG13; Piece: 2460; Folio: 29; Page: 14.) William James PETERS is shown as living with the ARKELL family at 45 Queen Street, Cheltenham. His relationship to the head of the household (Hannah Arkell) is given as ‘grandson’. I feel confident that this is the correct William James Peters as my mum remembers living in Queen Street when she was very small).

I am assuming that one of Hannah’s sons is William’s father but I don’t know of any way to prove this. I am contacting people on Ancestry who have the Arkells on their tree in the hope that some family gossip may have been passed on through the years!

Also on the 1901 census (Detail: Class: RG13; Piece: 2462; Folio: 75; Page: 9) there is a Clara PETERS shown as living at 4 Grosvenor Terrace, Cheltenham.

This Clara PETERS was born in Matlock, Derbyshire and on this and the 1911 census her occupation is given as ‘charwoman’ - as on William’s birth certificate. By no means conclusive evidence! But I cannot find any other Clara Peters who gives that as her occupation.

Another tenuous link to prove that this Clara is William’s mother is the address of 4 Grosvenor Street, where she is living in 1901. In 1911 the census (Detail: Class: RG14; Piece: 15548; Schedule Number: 18) shows the FRAPE family living at 19 Grosvenor Terrace, Cheltenham. Dolly Frape (who is only 4 at this time!) later marries William James PETERS. In my mind it seems quite likely that the two families were living in the same street at the same time at some point between 1901 and 1911.

Do you think that my theory stands up or maybe is a little too tenuous to hold together?

The problem I have is proving any of it with documentary proof. My mum’s brother, who is over 80 and still lives in Cheltenham, has been over to the Gloucestershire Records Office to search the Workhouse records for any mention of Clara, specifically for a next of kin entry (I was hoping that she would have given her brother or one of her sister’s names as next of kin when she entered the workhouse to give birth) but unfortunately my uncle found no mention of any Clara Peters at all.

The admission records and birth records for the Workhouse are missing for that time as well so I can get no help from those.

Unfortunately I cannot make the journey to Gloucestershire as I am a carer for my mum and she is unable to travel so I am rather stuck - I would love to go to the Records Office and have a rummage!

Any thoughts or ideas on how I could get over this hurdle would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for reading!

Donna

There does not seem to be a death registration for him in the British Isles but there is an alleged family story, that he went to America and that he was killed during an argument over a card game.

Can anyone, with access to American records, please find any evidence to support this possibility?

He was born in 1856 in Cambridgeshire, England. Unfortunately, in the family story, there is no indication of whereabouts in America the incident might have happened.

Richard Elphick and his wife Bathsheba (Friend) and their 2 sons, Charles aged 5 and William aged 18mths (became my gt gt grandfather), all from Hawkhurst, Kent travelled to Aus aboard the Eleanor. Richard died at sea. The Eleanor left Cork 18 April 1841 and arrived in Botany Bay 21 August 1841.According to newspaper reports, she had been in " a heavy gale in the Bay of Biscay, which lasted many days". A case of fever was noticed while the hatches were battened down during the gale. "there were 80 cases, with 6 adults and 7 children dying" The Eleanor was put into quarantine on arrival at Botany Bay, "fearing any fresh cases might make their appearance"
Questions:1. Would there be a death registration for Richard and where would it likely be located? ( I have never found one in Aus indexes).
2. Where would the family have gone aboard the ship? given that they were from Kent.

I have a brief report from a book called "Wooden Hookers" that gives some detail of the gale and the fever, and conditions aboard the ship.
I am wondering how to find out if there was a ships log or surgeons' log. I have only ever seen mention of this family on shipping list.
Thanks.
