View Full Version : Need Help Reading 1854 GRO Index Entry
Hi,
I think I have found a relative's birth entry, Samuel Stride born in 1854 (June), and it is really hard to read :(
I can't decipher the district (looks like Shipton ill?) and I think the volume / page number is 3c/642 but I am not entirley sure.
I guess I can't post a cropped image of the entry as it would probably be classed as copyright infringment? So if anyone can look it up and give me a second opinion it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
LJ

Could it be Shepton Mallet? I found a Samuel Stride aged about 6yrs on the 1861 census living in Ditcheat, Somerset and this is only 4.4 miles from Shepton Mallet. Let me know if you need any further info on his family - I would be happy to post it here for you.
Best wishes

I reckon it says Shepton M (for Shepton Mallet) but if so the volume number will be 5c.

Ditcheat is listed as being in Shepton Mallet registration district.
Like you I make the page number to be 642.

Brenda, thank you for finding the 1861 census info, I have the 1891 census and he is listed as being born in Ditcheat, Somerset but I can't make out the profession for Samuel (Railway something) and the street name, ______, Prestwood perhaps?
Pam, I'm thinking the 3 could actually be a 5? And it looks like it is Shepton Mallet :)
Thanks for your help ;)
