Some of you researching Norfolk Ancestors may already be familiar with this, but i hope this information may be of help to someone. On our regional news programme tonight, they did a feature about NAOMI, which is :- National Archive Of Memorial Inscriptions. Their aim is to record details from gravestones in all uk burial grounds. Quite a task!! To date they have managed to do an admirable job in Norfolk, and have recorded details from some 200 burial grounds there. To visit their site, and find out which burial grounds have been covered so far, go to:- www.memorialinscriptions.org.uk.
Hope someone finds this information useful.

I've copied and pasted your post into the Sticky - "Useful websites ... No 1"
if you come across sites like this, please feel free to add them to Geoffer's list
that way they dont get buried with time
It certainly looks like a very interesting site. Thanks.

A few weeks ago I spent time in Norfolk searching for visible evidence of ancestors in three churchyards. I had to tiptoe through the wet grass peering at gravestones. Some were very clear still, some had crumbled away and were indecipherable, others were completely covered in ivy.
As you say this project will be very helpful especially to those living far away.
Although I didn't find any, it was worth the visit. I knew from the evidence in the church registers, that many of my ancestors had been baptised, married and buried in those churches. So in my imgination I could see them walking up the path and in one church (Mileham) I thought it was probably the original baptismal font. The churchyards were incredibly peaceful, unlike some city graveyards, so I came away feeling that wherever their remains may be in that place, they were at rest in a beautiful place.

hi Jackie
I'm new to this site and was just browsing. I see you visited churchs in Norfolk looking for records (& ancestors). I was interested in the visit to Mileham! It seems my gr gr gr grandfather was born at Mileham c 1800. Did you see records in the church. If not where did you see them?
I have William Barnard b Mileham on the 1841 census, and a marriage in Coltishall Parish Church in 1824, but nothing of his early years.

Anyone looking for information and pictures of churches should try
http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/
Plus there's often odd bits under the individual towns/villages at http://www.origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/places/

Mileham Parish Registers for this period have been deposited in Norfolk Record Office. If you cannot get to the NRO, they may be able to sell you copies of the registers or ATs on fiches.

Very useful indeed. I managed to scoop a lot of Scotts and Amiss family members. After about 15 or so searches it all went very quiet on me and no more searches came back to the screen, not even with 0 members returned. I re-checked with a search that had proved positive before and yes, no longer available. Conclusion: either very slow through lots of people logging on OR they are on to someone taking advantage and trawling through the whole list of Norfolk dead ancestors and turned the tap off (about 4pm UK time)! If so why? They got Heritage Funding and genealogy is our game after all - both of us. Perhaps I am being too cynical and it has become very popular with huge ups and downs in searches. Anyway this site is definitely a goldmine and thanks to all those volunteers tracking down and entering MI information.
