My Great-Great Uncle William Trimble was killed abord HMS Hilary on 17-5-1917 when she was torpedoed in the Atlantic. On CWGC site he is listed as RN but I have now found she was a armed merchant vessel in the Naval Auxuillaies (sp). I can't find any info on line or in books about the vessel does anyone know where I could look?

Hi Katie
While you are waiting for the full griff you may find the following of some use.
HMS Hilary was a 6329 ton and as you say an Armed Merchant Cruiser. She was hired by the Navy on 21 November 1914 and was sunk West of the Shetlands on 25 May 1917 by U88. U88 was commanded by Walther Schwieger and she was lost with all hands on 5 September 1917. She sank off the Dutch island of Terschelling, probably due to hitting a mine.
