Does anyone know how I can find emigration lists for this period ? My ancestors Charlotte and Janet Mackay (McKay) travelled there from UK during this time period - Charlotte was back in Scotland by 1901 but no record of Janet, who I assume stayed there. The Ellis Island site doesn't cover this period.

They lived in Northern Scotland but I don't know where they are likely to have sailed from.

be grateful for any leads!

Does anyone know how I can find emigration lists for this period ?Passenger lists of emigrants were not maintained until 1890, these are held at The National Archives (TNA) in class BT27. Inward passenger lists (from 1878) are held at TNA in BT26, for both classes of document, you would need to either know the ship, or the port and a rough idea of the date.

TNA has several research guides on its web-site including this one on emigration:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=346
The guide mentions assisted emigration under the Poor Law Amendment Act and records exist from 1834-1890, these are held at TNA in class MH12. They list names and ages of applicants, along with intended place of emigration.

There is the following web-site which has some passenger lists
http://www.immigrantships.net/
I believe there is another site with passenger lists called the Olive Branch, or something similar.

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/emigration/search.html Has some Mackays emigrating to the U.S and Canada between 1911 and 1924. Not much use for the names you have put but it may give you clues as to if anyone else went later on.

http://www.castlegarden.org - Similar to Ellisisland but -dont quote me !
