1881 census check

im trying to find the following on the 1881 census but with no luck can anyone help?

john james richards born 1850c in kingston somerset/devon
his son charles henry born stoke dameral 1872 (have found his birth but nothing else)
had a son frederick james in 1901 tiverton
have no info on either henry or johns wives
would be most greatful for any help.

If you've got the birth registration details, purchasing the certificate would provide you with his mother's name, which could really aid your search of the 1881.

Is this a seafaring family?
John may not be 'at home' (the Devonport area is so linked with all things Naval) perhaps father was at sea and Charles is home with mother?

I've found a possible although this Charles is 10, but still a possible?
The head of the family Elizabeth, is listed as married, not a widow.

Can I ask how you know what you know i.e. John & Charles' birth years?

Certificates should be treated as a primary source when gathering information,
but you mention that you don't have any information on either of the wives.
If you purchase a copy of Charles Henry's birth certificate, for which you say you have found the details, it will contain some or all of the following information, which will give you added clues when searching the census, and help to make sure you're following the right line.

Births :
District, Date & Place of Birth,
Child's ForeNames & Surname, Child's Sex,
Father's Name, Fathers Place of Birth, Father's Occupation,
Mother's Name, Mother's Occupation, Mother's Place of Birth, Mother's Usual Address,
Informant's Name, Informants Qualification, Informant's Address, Informant's Signature,
Date of Registration,Registrar's Name & Signature,
Child's Revised Name (if any, after registration).
