I just wanted to mention one of my brick walls that I broke last month (in Sept). As most of you know I have been looking for my 3x gt grandparents - John & Amy Burrow. In Devon she was called Emma. I finally found that John died in Devon in 1839. So what happened to her? She didnt show up in the 1841 census - at least not as Emma Burrow. I figued she either died or remarried.

I have been using British origins 1841 and my archive CD census records a LOT this year. :) And since British origins is transcribed directly from the same Archive CD Books census records that I have - I figured they are part of this search.

Anyway I tried all mannor of BURROW configurations during various searches this year. Finally I found the kids on British origins 1841 census as BURRUGH. Quickly checked my CDs and yep - there she was - Emma Lathrope - married to James Lathrope. With all 4 kids - all showing correct ages and out of county birthplaces :) (they were born in Somerset).

Now I have to find Emma's death. She is NOT on the 1851 census - James is listed as a widower so Emma died between 1841 & 1851. So far the only death registration I have found is Amelia Lathrope died in Honiton district (which does cover Ottery St Mary) in 1843. I still need to get the certificate.

Hi BD,
Have you heard of the Online Parish Clerks scheme? Devon seems to be quite active in this, and there's one listed for Ottery St Mary. (Um, just clicked on the connection and got a 'sorry unavailable' so you might have to try the co-ordinator.) When you click on the link to Ottery SM, you then have to scroll down to 'genealogy'.
I don't know how much info the OPCs give out because they say they won't provide a general look-up service. They might however be willing to confirm whether or not an Amelia Lathrope was buried in OSM in 1843.

Alternatively there might be something in the parish records in the freepages links near the bottom of the page at BMD.
(There's currently a problem, so I can't find out for you.)

Yes I have emailed the OPC for Ottery St Mary a number of times. She says that everything she has is on the website - and thats not much. A few trade directory transcriptions - but no BMD's.

I've had faster service buying the BMD booklets directly from the Devon FHS myself. :)

I'm still trying to get my credit card sufficiently into the black so I can purchase Emma's (Amelia?) death certificate, as well a few other death certs that I cant afford right now.

But thanks for the suggestion. :)
