Reference to this immigration centre just crossed my desk, and I had never heard of it, so I hope this might be useful to someone.
Castle Garden was a Manhattan immigration centre before Ellis Island. Castle Garden at http://www.castlegarden.org/ allows you to search the records of 10 million of the immigrants processed through this site. There is apparently another 2 million records that need to be digitized.
A Quick Search allows you to search by search name and time period. Results include name, occupation, age, gender, date of arrival, place of origin, and ship name. The 'Quick search' is free - the advanced search costs money, but I think you would probably only need it if you wished to refine your search because you had too many hits.
