I am trying to trace the mother of Thomas Pettengell. In september 1861 age
23 he was married to Elizabeth Ann Bradshaw she was 19.On his marriage
certificate his job was an excavator. His fathers name was John Pettengell
and his job was a wheelwright.
Any help much appreciated.
Les
Have you found him (and/or the wife to be) in the 1861 Census?
Are we looking in places like Islington?

Hi mark
thank you for your reply. Yes they were in Islington area of london.
Grays Inn Road on the marriage certificate.
Les
Well it looks like he's a lodger in someone else's house in the 1861 census in Islington ... and he's apparently born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
There's one possibility on the IGI with a slightly different surname spelling ...
The 1861 Census index at Ancestry has it as Pettengall by the way.

Hi Mark
Thank you once again for your help.Thomas Pettengell was a lodger with
Henry and Mary Bradshaw in 1861.They had a daughter Elizabeth Ann Bradshaw who he married in september 1861 in Islington.I know Thomas
fathers name was John Pettengell its his mother I have been unable to
find.Thank you again for your help.
Les
I must be going blind then ...
Henry & Mary Bradshaw are on this schedule in 1861 census, along with Elizabeth A Bradshaw.
RG 9 / 131 / ED 39 folio 116 page 56 schedule 361
30 Randalls Cott's, St Mary Islington
Thomas Pettengall is a lodger on this schedule in 1861 census
RG 9 / 133 / ED 48 folio 56 page 55 schedule 333
4 Crescent Avenue, Islington
I'd presume that in the 1851 & 1841 Censuses he'd more likely be at home with his parents. And as there don't seem to be that many Thomas Pettengell's / Pettengall's / Pettingale's that might be your easiest method to find his mother's name, unless she died pre-1841.

Hi Mark
Thank you for looking for me.I will keep on searching.all the best
Les
In the 1851 Census, the likliest looking candidate for Thomas is a 15 year old indexed by Ancestry as Thomas Pettingell on
HO 107 / 1712 / ED 4d folio 166 page 24 schedule 75
enumerated as a Farm Lab living at Birchwood Farm, Bishops Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
Looking at the image on Ancestry, the surname could easily be Pattengall (it's rather blurred and indistinct).
Still doesn't help you with the parentage, except that it better matches the IGI entry I mentioned before, for his age.

Hello Ken
I dont know why but both my replys have gone under your second message. hope this keeps under John and Sarah.
Thanks again.
Les
Well, the IGI does have a John PETTENGELL marrying a Sarah BARRANCE 22 April 1817 in Caldecote, Hertford.
And if you then do a christening search based on those parent names, you see the children already listed in the 1841 census
John & Sarah / Elizabeth / George / Fanny / Henry / Thomas / Robert
