Henry and Ellen Nicholls (nee Smith) married in Bloxwich abt. 1847. My g grandfather, John Albert Nicholls b. abt. 1855, was one of their children.

I would like to learn if there were other children born into this family and where they were born.

I would be grateful of a lookup of the 1851 and 1861 census.

Thanking you

Carrie

The 1861 census is available online at 1837 online.

The 1861 census for Staffs records:
RG9/2012 f45 p20
Cunneries, Walsall
Henry Nicholls, hd, 42, awl blade maker
Elizabeth wf, 32, bn Silkstone, Yorks
William, son, 13, awl blade maker
John, son, 6
(apart from Elizabeth, the others were born Bloxwich).

You should double-check this entry to make sure I haven't made a transcription error.

Hi Carrie,
I have looked for this Nicholls family for you and found a few discrepancies. I will give you what I have found and leave you to ponder over it!

Firstly the IGI gives the following information provided by a member of LDS.
Marriage of Henry Nicholls age 28 & Ellen Smith age 21 at Bloxwich 20 April 1847. It gives Henry's father as Mark Nicholls.
Secondly a birth and death record for a John ALFRED Nicholls son of Henry & EMMA Nicholls. The birth date is 26 Aug 1855 & death 15 Aug 1934, Stafford.

So on to the 1861 census:- Bloxwich, Staffs.
RG9/2012 Folio 45 Page 20
107 Cummeries?
Henry Nicholls Head 42 Awl Blade Maker Born Bloxwich
Elizabeth Nicholls wife 32 Born Yorks, Silkstone
William Nicholls Son 13 Awl Blade Maker Born Bloxwich
John Nicholls Son 6 Scholar Born Bloxwich
Mark Nicholls Lodger Unm. 30 Awl Blade Maker Born Bloxwich.

Note the wife is named Elizabeth. IGI gives a marriage of Henry Nicholls & Ellen Elizabeth Obery Butler at Bloxwich 5 April 1858.
The presence of a Mark Nicholls as a lodger is interesting!

Regards Jeremy.

GeoffersGeoffers, I couldn't resist responding to you re spelling -- but on another thread since this is getting to be a tad off topic for Carrie's thread. See Typoglycemia (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9184)... :)

Thankyou Geoffers and Jeremy for the census information

My grandmother Sarah Ellen Nicholls, the only daughter of John Allbert Nicholls, said the family always had her father's uncle Mark Nicholls living with them. Sarah Ellen was given her grandmothers name (Ellen) for her second name.

John Albert Nicholls was injured in a coal mine in Staffordshire and died of his injuries in Walsall and District Hospital 31 of October 1898. He was a pit pony vet.

It would be good to track down William Nicholls in the 1871 census. The 1851 census my show us that Ellen was the name of John Albert's first wife, and the Elizabeth in the 1861 census is his second wife.

Thanking you for your help

Hi Carrie,
This last sentence doesn't quite make sense. Do you mean Henry's wives Ellen & Elizabeth? Do you really mean it would be good to track down Henry or his son William in 1871.
Cheers Jeremy.

William still seems to be living at home with his parents in the 1871 census of Walsall:

Yes, I did make a mistake.
I really ment to write, Henry Nicholls could have married twice.
His first wife being Ellen and the second Elizabeth.

I wonder who William, Henry's eldest son married? and
did he have children?

You have all been very helpful in tracing my Nicholls
forebears.

Thankyou

Carrie
