I have just discovered (with help from my friends :)) that my gt. gt. grandfather was a Police Constable in London in 1851.

Does anyone know if there would have been records kept of his Service? He was previously in the Army, and as I have know idea what Regiment he served with, or when he left, it would be interesting to know when he actually joined the Police Force. Also it would help to know when he left as he died around early 1860's and was shown as a deceased Labourer on his son's marriage cert. in 1867.

Try police-orders site
It was password protected but on another site they claim anyone can now search, haven't been there for a while so cannot confirm.

That site is very good Keith, and not password protected now. I thought I'd had some luck when I found someone with the same surname and and christian name, but the entries are about 4 years out both for his entry and pensioning off. Back to the drawing board!!

Thanks.

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104

As he left the army prior to 1854, he is likely to be included in the indexed records on TNA's catalogue
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp
Enter his name in the first field and in the 'Department or series code' enter WO97. You may have to try variant spellings of a name and you may have to just try his surname.

If you still get no hits, he may just conceivably be in the earlier records, in this case, enter name in first field and WO121 in the last field.

Hello Glenys

Have you looked at the Black Sheep Index ? I don't know how good it is as I have never had cause to use it :o It is just another one of those sites that I thought might come in useful one day.... :D

Best wishes

Thanks for that Ann, it's very interesting! I found a policeman whose name was the same as my gt.gt. grandfather, but he was an Inspector who was rewarded in 1881. Too late for my rellie as he died I believe early 1860s.

I'll hang on to that ULR though as it looks very interesting and `might' come in handy one of these days. ;)

Thanks Geoffers, I'll have a look at those ULR's. It will keep me busy for a while I suspect. ;)

Hello Keith

Many thanks for that London Police Site

Found what I needed. Been searching for PC Lewis Loader c1900 for a long time and even sent letters to two departments over the past 5 years. They replied but were no help. That is a good Site.

Thanks.

I would like to see this thread expand to include the names of more police
and their stories.

I would add a codicil that the stories should not be recent. For example, I'm sure you don't want to know how someone in a control room (I wonder who?) called up a foot patrol in a town centre and asked him to check in the area of the bus station as there was the report of a dead cinch there. - pause - back came the question, "What's a cinch?" - pause whilst the controllers think of an answer, "er, it's a small brown furry animal, bit like a large mole. it's a carrier of disease which has to be reported to the council so that they can recover the body." Other foot patrols called in to say that he was stopping people going to work to ask if they'd seen a dead cinch! Well, it was a quiet morning, you've got to do something while away the day.

These and other tales will not be found in any Occurrence Book, pocketbook, etc.
