Hi all, I have William Spedding born approx 1794, he marries Jane Noble at St Cuthberts Church in Carlisle Dec 1 1817, on the micro fiche it doesnt give their fathers names. In 1851 Jane is living with her son and daughter in Carlisle.
On the census(1851), her place of birth is shown as Wallsey Cumberland, on the 1841 it states she was born in Cumberland.

I have tried to locate this place and so far, zilch. Is their anyone out there who knows where this was/is?

Many Thanks
Kate

Hello Kate
Have you tried WALLASEY Cheshire ?
I am totally useless on geography I dont know about boundary changes or how close to Cumberland Cheshire was or is ? So maybe you were missing just one digit "A".

Probably something you have looked into but worth mentioning if you havent beings as no one else has answered you yet ;)

It's a tiny place just north east of Carlisle on Hadrian's Wall; often spelt Wallby on older records.

It's quite possible that the enumerator found difficulty in reading the schedule and misinterpreted a blotched 's' for the letter 'b'.

Kate For what it is worth, there are a lot of Speddings in Whitehaven at that time frame. One is a minister of either St. James or Holy Trinity.....my memory fails me, lol.

Hi everyone, Well I downloaded irfanview so I could see the census clearly, old age and good eyesight dont go together!.

It turns out to be Wallby, which is Crosby on Eden area and it looks like the records are in Carlisle so I can check there, yippee.

I have seen the Speddings in Whitehaven, as yet though havent found any links with them, there are not really many Speddings in Carlisle around 1800, so its possible I could yet find a link.

Thanks again all
Kate
