The will of HENRY SAMUEL COOPER, dated 3rd February 1883 refers to the 'Children of my late sister Mrs EMILY CARR now residing in GEELONG, Victoria.'
Can anyone suggest how best i might set about getting information about them? I do not know whether she or her husband went to Australia themselves, or whetgher it was only the children, and I have not yet found their names.
All I know is that EMILY CAUSER COOPER, who was my g-grandmother's niece, was christened at Shifnal, Shropshire in 1825 and married JOHN STEPHEN(S) CARR in 1846 at St Peter, Walworth, South London. I have not yet been able to find them in the 1851 censaus.

For $A17.50 you can download a certificate from the Victorian BDM website - a certificate will tell you where they were born - that will give you an indication of if the whole family came here or not - also if they were born overseas the death certificate asked how long that they were residing in Australia. Of course, the info is only as good as the knowledge of the informant. I see that they slightly mixed up the surname of mum. They seem to have stayed at Geelong.

the url is a hundred miles long so you'll have to start at the homepage and go to the Births, Deaths and Marriages section from there.

I have found Emily - she is buried at Geelong - with this date you can get her death certificate online. You do not need a reg number. There are lots of CARRs buried in the area, including John, but not with a middle name given.

The web site is an index to Geelong and District burials.

Another one for you - you didn't find them in 1851 because it appears that they arrived in Australia as Assisted immigrants in 1849 !

John and Emily CARR, aged 21 and 24 arrived on the TASMAN 1849 - it gives the month too, but I didn't take note.

Thank you very much Christine. I never expected to get so much information, and so quickly. EMILY hsad been eluding me for years. I only found her marriage a few months ago, and saw the reference to her in her brother's will only last month.
Thanks again, FredP.

Christine, this is not so much a reply as an added request.
Does your CD contain the name WILLIAM JOHN PARTRIDGE ?
He left England supposedly for Australia some time after 1886, and was said to be still alive around 1920. It has occurred to me that having left the army and received nothing from the wills of sundry relatives, including the HENRY SAMUEL COOPER meantioned earlier, he might have thought the CARRs were on to a good thing in Geelong and deecided to follow them.
He was born 9th September 1844 in Lambeth and his wife died in Chatham in his absence on 9th SAeptember 1892. He was, incidentally, my grandfather!
Thank you so much for your trouble, FredP.

No, John William and some just plain William - but there aren't really any of a similar age, What are his parents names? I have deaths from 1921-1985. I have a friend who can check 1920.

Thank you Christine.
His parents were JOHN and ELIZABETH ANN, nee PICKEN. This was just a shot in the dark, and I would have been rather surprised if it had been successful. No one, not even the army authorities have been able to tell me what became of him, despite the fact that he was an army pensioner.
Sincerely, FredP.

I'll ask my friend to look up 1920. There is a William Partridge buried in the Geelong district 1920 - no age recorded, so one could be lucky.

That William is a two year old infant of William James PARTRIDGE and Hester LANCASTER, death registered Berringa 1920. No likely chaps 1914-1920
Closest is this one in 1933, but at 80 is about 9 years too young.

Thank you, Christine.
I will comsider looking into that last possibility. Some people get a bit vague about their ages as time goes by, and he may have had a purpose in concealing his true age.
