My great aunt was born Jemima Carter (aka Janette) in 1885 in Potters Marston Leicestershire. She married a Mr Norris (I know not whether in UK or Australia) who, I am told, was an Australian sheep farmer. I know that in 1948 she was living in Lonsdale St Adelaide. Any further information would be useful.

In 1891, she is 7 years old and living with her parents, James and Susan and siblings, Alice, Elizabeth and Ernest in Potters Marston at Shaw Barn Cottage. James is 47, a farm labourer, born in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. Susan is 45, born in Potters Marston. Alice, Elizabeth and Ernest are 10, 5 and 2 respectively. Alice was born in Hinckley, Leicestershire and Jemima, Elizabeth and Ernest in Potters Marston. [Reference: RG12/2501 Folio 117 Page 23]

In 1901, she is 16 years old, a general servant and still with her family at 106 Northampton St., Leicester, Leicestershire. Mother Susan, 56, is a widow and working as a charwoman. Susan's birthplace is given as Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. Also at home is sister Isabel, 26, a tailoress, born in Stoney Stanton. James Frank, 10 months, born in Leicestershire [no town given] is listed as Susan's son.

In 1871, James, 29, is a railway labourer and Susan, 25, is a Seamstress. They are living on ?Clint Hill Lane in Stoney Stanton with sons James, 4, a scholar, and Thomas, 1, and a boarder, Ann GOODMAN 30, single and also a seamstress. Birthplace for both James Sr. and Jr. is given as Earl Shilton. Birthplace for Susan, Thomas and Ann is Stoney Stanton. [Reference: RG10/3235 Folio 118 Page 8]

In 1861, James, 20 is a "cow-man" living in the household of Thomas Kirby OLDACRE, 36, a farmer of 180 acres employing 3 labourers and 1 boy in Stapleton, Leicestershire. [Reference RG9/2263 Folio 39 Page 2]

There is a marriage record for a James CARTER and a Susan GOODMAN in the June quarter of 1866 in Hinckley, Leicestershire [Reference: Volume 7a Page 95] which looks like a good match for your couple. Perhaps Ann GOODMAN is Susan's sister. Obtaining a copy of the marriage certificate would give you fathers' names.

In 1861, there is a Susan GOODMAN, 15, born in Stoney Stanton, working as a general servant in the household of John and Lydia HACKETT on Long Street which is near Clint Hill Lane. John is a tailor and grocer. [Reference RG9/2259 Folio 124 Page 9]

Just to round things out...

In 1861, Ann GOODMAN is 19, an assistant laundress, living with her parents and younger siblings in Stoney Stanton. There's a good possibility this is Susan's family as well.

Parents are Thomas and Elizabeth GOODMAN, 45 and 46, respectively. Thomas is an ag. lab. and Elizabeth is a laundress. Both were born in Stoney Stanton. Brothers James S. and Walter, 8 and 6, were also born in Stoney Stanton. [Reference: RG9/2259 Folio 132 Page 138]
