Hi Chris,

I feel it is highly unlikely that any of them are his children though tis possible they are related in some way.

It is more probable that they are the children of Mr and Mrs Hoddinott who were away from the home when the census was taken. Maybe Mrs Hoddinott was his sister (though there are no Hoddinott/Vallis marriages on Free BMD as yet) or perhaps he was just baby sitting for the night.

I have seen other examples like this in the census where no head is present and the children are recorded as son/daughter with a servant or visitor to keep them company. In one instance both parents had died in the month prior to the census being taken.

If he was the head he would probably have been recorded as such and would usually be found as the first entry for the household (though there may have been an error by an enumerator who recorded the household members in the wrong order).

Also none of the children are married so if they were his children you would expect to find them recorded as Vallis.

By the way there are 66 Hoddinott folks born in Frome in the 1861 census so not possible to find the missing parents. The 1851 census may pick the family up of course.
