Greetings

I'm looking for Boswells at the turn of the 19th Century in the Studley-Worcester vicinity. My GGG grandfather was John Boswell born @ 1806. In 1841 Census he and his family are living in Studley. There's also a Thomas Boswell living nearby who was born in @1800. Could be John's brother. Can find no other Boswell's in the area. Anything from the 1851 Census would be especially appreciated.

Hi Mark,
Recently I did some research for some friends of mine by the name of Austin. The direct line descended through a Thomas Austin who married Elizabeth Boswell in 1857 at Studley, she was the daughter of Thomas And Elizabeth Boswell and is the one mentioned on the 1851 census. When I visited the church I noticed a large ornate gravestone to Thomas & Elizabeth Boswell and I seem to recall it also mentioned some children who died young. I live about 12 miles from Studley and if you are interested I can collect the information when I next visit but not sure how long that will be.
Cheers Jeremy.

I'm related to a Henry Boswell (will be on the 1851 census), who married a Mary Ann.

They had a son, William in 1852 - he was born in Alcester. Alcester's about 4 miles from Studley.

Are we related ?!

Anyone with any further info ?

Tim,

According to the 1861 census of Alcester (RG9/2234, folio 31, page 14), your Henry was born in Evesham, Worcestershire. In the 1851 census he appears to be in Inkberrow (HO107/2074, folio 486, page 6) and described as an unmarried Maltsters Labourer living in the household of a Thomas Flack?, Maltster at Cook Hill.

The 1841 census of Evesham via Ancestry shows what could be a family of BOSWELLs on HO107/1207/8, folio 28, page 5 but the writing is extremely faint and almost illegible for this particular family and I can't actually decipher what could be a Henry there. There is a Heny BOSWELL shown in Dudley on HO107/1207/7, folio 41, page 24 living with father William, mother Elizabeth and siblings Thomas, Ann and Charles but whether he is yours who knows.

There is a marriage according to FreeBMD in the September qtr 1851 at Alcester registration district volume 16, page 261 of a Henry BOSWELL and one of the other names on the page is that of a Mary Ann YEOMANS. If you send for the certificate (can be ordered online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/) then that should give you Henry's & Mary Ann's fathers names which should hopefully make it easier to trace them in the 1841 census.

Hope this helps.

Janet

Thanks so much for this.

Am trying to find the 1851 entry that you mention via Ancestry, but can't. How did you manage to find it ?!!

I've got lots of other FreeBMD marriages to look up. Please could you advise me the best way to find the name of the bride, as you did for Mary Ann Yeomans ? Is there some way of cross referencing the marriage ?

Thanks again,

Tim.
