I have been researching the Knowles in Derbyshire and came across a William Knowles in a "Copy of a Poll taken for theCounty of Derby" 1734. It says "freeholder" Foxlow. Can anyone tell me what this vote was all about and does the number 8 in the column for Charles Cavendish( Duke of Devonshire, I assume) refer to 8 people voting for him? Any suggestions on further research on the said William Knowles of Foxlow?
Thanks

To answer the question in the thread title, Foxlow may be the farm which can be found on http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
(just enter Foxlow and search, it's to the south of Buxton)

Any suggestions on further research on the said William Knowles of Foxlow?Possibly Militia Ballots (from 1757), parish registers, manor records, wills

Thanks G. I had looked up Foxlow and decided it was now a housing and industrial estate. That is all I have found. However in 1857 I have found a Lower and Upper Foxlow farms. Do you or anyone know if records of the sale of a farm are to be found somewhere? This would be back in 1800-1830. I would assume that if the farm was freehold it was not on the Devonshire's estate.
