Hi :)

I have been trawling through the marriage index at my local library and have some across something I don't understand, this is the entry;

Oliver C Game or Squires Bournemouth 6b 346

Why is the surname of the wife Game or Squires? I am confused by this.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated :)

Hi Rod,

Sorry I forgot to add his surname, it should read;

Stride Oliver C .......Game or Squires......Bournemouth 6b 346
(his) .........................(hers)

This often happens when the woman is a widow marrying again and one was her maiden name and the other was her married name.

Thanks Rod and Jeeb for helping ;)

What would happen if a woman has been married before but isn't a widow, would her surname from her last marriage be listed on the new marriage certificate or would it revert back to her maiden name?

Hi,
I assume you are referring to a divorcee. Normally a woman who has been married and then widowed or divorced retains her married name especially if she has children. There is however no law in this country stating what a person must call themselves and it would be quite legal for a woman to chose to revert to her maiden name after divorcing, as indeed there is no law to say a woman must accept her husband's name after marriage but of course this was the norm in days past. To answer your question, legally she could call herself by her married or maiden name on a second marriage.
