Hello,
I am new to this group and to British genealogy. I have just this past week been able to trace immigrant ancestors from North Carolina back to Scotland around 1750. Now I am trying to learn some basics on researching that era in Scotland from across the Atlantic. I really enjoy this website.

Hello and Welcome !!

There arent many of us up here at this time of night 01.52 but the site clock says otherwise ( its over an hour fast !) My research has mainly been in Scotland so if you need any help on web sites ie............... www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the best and you can download images of bmd,s for a fee and if your roots are in Moray www.moray.gov.uk are very helpful and its free - just follow the local heritage link - but looking at your dates you wont need these ! . If you find anywhere useful for 1750 and beyond let me know ! You may find www.talkingscot.com useful. What areas are you researching in Scotland ?

Hello Tracey,
Thanks for the links. I am researching in Kingoldrum, Angus for the name Hughes. I am also researching the name McInyre, which from what I have read came from Glenoe in Argyll.

Hello Roger

I am just starting on my side from Argyll my gt x 3 grandmother - not the easiest - and im not looking forward to it as where mine were the boarder changed from Argyllshire to Invernesshire and she is sometimes on census (1871/81) as being born in Invernesshire and on poor relief records as born in Kilmallie Argyll ! (c 1870-80,s) even though the boarder didnt change till 1911  But i do know this is her for sure ? ! Sadly Hughes and McInyre are not part of my family and i am itching to make that U.S Scottish connection - but mine is in Chicago and New Jersey .......never mind

Hi Roger
Kingoldrum is a village just to the west of Kirriemuir where some of my ancestors came from. My dad was born in Forfar. Sadly he died a couple of months ago - he would have known all about the area. Another useful website is freecen. It has the 1841 census for Angus. Forfar library has the church records for Angus. You could try contacting them directly for help.
