My grandfather, b: 1884 Southants - d: 1951 Sydney, Aust.
I have a "good" photo of grandfather in Army uniform, with peaked cap. The hat badge has been identified as Royal Engineers.
He was a motor-mechanic/chauffeur (driver?) in civvy life.
How can I find his military service?? No enlistment number - nothing!

Have a read of The National Archives (TNA) resaerch guides:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1
select 'B' and scroll through the links for British Army.
You might look for any medals awarded in WW1, search the medal cards online at documents online. If you find a match, you can download the image on payment of the relevant fee.

John
There is a very good chance he was WR/203650 Sappper Charles I F Williams RE. He also had another number 284466. The WR prefix means he served with either an Inland Waterways Transport or Docks unit, Railway unit or perhaps a road or quarrying company. He has two numbers because there was a number chage for sappers in this area of employment, which appears to have taken place around mid-1917. You can download his Medal Index Card from the National Archive website.
