If this was post-1890, passenger lists are held by The National Archives (TNA) in document class BT27. However, the lists are arranged by port of departure and there isn't a central index. If you knew the ship on which they emigrated and this was from 1906 onwards, then registers of passenger lists at TNA in BT32 would show you the port of departure, making it easier to locate the relevant passenger list.

Registers of passports issued are also at TNA (in FO610) and may give a clue as to when someone emigrated, again depending on the date. Passports were not common prior to WW1.

There is a web-site http://www.immigrantships.net/ which has some passenger lists, but I don't know about how extensive these are, or how easy to use.
