Take a look at the 1881 census. The Robert WHITTY born in 1857 is there with a wife Jane and a son, Albert and an aunt Jane RICKETTS who is 48 and a Glover. Robert's occupation is listed as Carter.

So, all in all, with his occupation, a wife named Jane and an aunt named Jane RICKETTS [who was on the 1861 census with Jane GOODRIDGE's family], I think it's a pretty sure thing that this is your man!

The other Robert WHITTY/WHITTEY is, no doubt, related to your Robert -- with the close proximity and similarity in family given names, they could be a first cousin and their fathers could be brothers. Worth looking into...
