Anyone able to offer advice or suggestions on records that might be available for anyone involved in civil defence or home guard during WW1?

Or for WW2 for that matter.

For WW2, see:

With regard to WW1, the nearest you will get to the equivilent of the WW2 Home Guard is the Royal Defence Corps and the Volunteer Training Corps. You will not find service records directly under these titles but they did have parent regiments, principally infantry. Look in the Medal Index Cards first, to see if your subject is listed.

The Royal defence Corps was established by Royal charter in March 1916 and by the end of the War comprised over 500 Protection Companies. In August 1917 the existing Home Service Garrison Infantry Battalions were renumbered as battalions of the RDC. The information comes from the Imperial War Museum Review No. 11 which seems to be one of the few mentions the RDC gets in the literature.
