Anyone out there tracing the Iles family from Ampney St Mary during the 19th century?
Or does anyone have access to the parish records for the area?

Antony

Ampney st Mary is one of several small villages in Gloucestershire. Other villages nearby are Ampney St Peter, Ampney Crusis and Barnsley. Ampney St Mary is about 4 miles east of Cirencester, (current population approx 54).

I have come across Dinah Iles on several occasions and I believe she is linked to my tree. However I have yet to find the link. Unfortunately I have not done any research on this family line for a long time. So far all I have is the folllowing:-

Louisa Iles (b 23/may/1855) - daughter of James Iles and Mary Jane Norris.
James I believe was born in 1815 in Ampney St Mary but I do not have any thing on his parents at the moment.
Louisa is my paternal grandmother's grandmother.

If any of this sounds familiar - let me know. Thanks
Antony

Hi Antony

Sorry I have not replied earlier but rarely visit this board. Does not sound like the Dinah I am looking for. Dinah was born in either Bitton or Hanham, Bristol. She married a George Coole in approx 1834. Thanks for your reply.

Antony,

Here are James & Mary in the 1851 census of Ampney Crucis with some of Mary's family by the look of it:

HO107/1968, folio 567, page 18
Schedule 6

James ILES Head Mar 36 Farm Labourer Glou Ampney Crucis
Mary do Wife Mar 27 do Barnsley
Jane do Daur 6 Scholar do Ampney Crucis
Henry do Son 5 Scholar do do do
Ann do Daur 2 do do do
Dinah HANCOCK Mother in law W 66 Pauper formerly Farm Labourer
do South Cerney
Giles HANCOCK Brother in law U 28? Farm Labourer do Ampney Crucis

However, I can't find a marriage on the GRO Index between a James ILES and a Mary HANCOCK just the one between James & Mary NORRIS in 1843. However, in the 1861 census of Ampney Crucis, James, Mary and family are there with a Giles HANCOCK as a Boarder so there does seem to be a link and I have found Dinah and Giles in the 1841 census of Ampney Crucis (I think!!), but they are shown as having what looks like the surname of HARRIS (trancribed as HANNA by Ancestry) but perhaps the surname is meant to be HANCOCK?:

HO107/354/6, folio 10, page 13

William HARRIS 65 Ag Lab Born in county yes
Dinah do 45 yes
Giles do 15 yes

I'm not sure whether this helps or not. Could this Dinah be the one you were referring to and is actually connected to James in some way - maybe she married James' father and when he died married this William HANCOCK/HARRIS?? I can't find James in the 1841 census, but there is a Mary NORRIS of approx the correct age working as a Female Servant in Cirencester (HO107/380/1, folio 39, page 23)
