I have striven long and hard to find the marriage of my gt-gt g/dad John BEESON. He was a builder, owning his own business eventually in Derby and living for the last few decades of his life on or around Darley lane. In the 1861 census however he was on Kensington St living with father Samuel and with 'boarders' Harriet & her daughters Mary, Eliza and Emma. Their surname is difficult to read but could be Milward or Millard or even Williams. On the 1871 census John and Harriet are married with my 10 yr old (!!) gt-g/dad Samuel on Darley Lane, along with other children. Eliza and Emma are shown as daughters but he does acknowledge them in his will as step-daughters! In fact, in due course, they benefitted from his will equally if not more than his 'own' children.

Anyway i cannot find a marriage between John and Harriet and am beginning to believe that they didnt marry! Harriet pres' married before - where is her husband?? I have tried all the obvious sources but no success. There are one or two possibilities outside of Derbyshire but why would they go away from home to marry? She states Allestree as her place of birth. Have tried to find a first marriage for her but no success either! Have tried to find a family by that name(s) in the county - no obvious choices! Help!!

Does anyone fancy looking up the entry for 1861 census and seeing how they would decipher Harriets surname? To make matters worse it looks to me like her daughters have a different name!! My census reference is RG9/2503, folio 114 (61 Kensington St)

Any other help or advice greatfully received. Harriet went on to die tragically following severe burns from her pinny catching fire in the February of 1888!

I think it is almost definitely Milward.
I can't help with the marriage but I did look for a Harriet Milward on the 1841 but the only one in Allestree is a year old.

Have you got this IGI entry? I found it looking at the Allestree batch numbers.
Harriet d/o Joseph & Hannah Milward, bapt 18 Oct 1829, St Edmunds, Allestree.

As you say, there doesn't appear to be a Beeson/Milward marriage, even at St Werburghs.

Sorry I can't help more

Thankyou so much Patrisia. It will be a big help if Harriet reverted to her maiden-name and the date is about right too as she was 60 when she died in 1888. Found gt-g/dads birth cert and the registrar has transcribed the surname as BEESON formerly MILLARD. Does anyone know whether the use of the word 'formerly' denotes a previous surname thru' marriage or whether it is used whether it is a maiden name or previous married name......or is it just pot-luck!! Hope you follow that??
