The medal card for my grandfather John Ashburton Dunning has him serving in both the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Pte 7992) and in the Labour Corps (Pte 563390), but there are no regiment numbers. He entered the war on 20/09/1915.

I would like to know if anyone has access to any information on these regiments, other than that supplied by the Highlanders websites and regiments.org. I would be especially interested in hearing from anyone with ancestors who served in these Corps.

Thank you, Caroline :)

His A&SH number suggests he was a regular soldier. He was probabably transferred to the Labour Corps because of unfitness for front-line service, either through wounds or ill-health. His battalion number (s) will be found in the actual medal roll itself. The reference number for the roll is entered against his name on the Medal index Card. Unfortunately these can only be acessed by a personal visit to the National Archive at Kew.
