A posting to Norfolk mailing list (Rootsweb) had a link to the Utah news page. Another researcher posted a message saying it was estimated to take 6 years to scan the microfilms & no estimate for the indexing.
I know nothing more than that but as it looks promising I wanted to pass it on. Hopefully if ordinary researchers like ourselves are allowed to work on the indexes (as on Freebmd) not only will the indexing be quicker but hopefully more acurate than some indexes on the internet.

The slightly sad thing though is that they're only talking about putting the indexes online ... not the images.

You are right Mark, I read it so quickly that when they mentioned scanned images I just presumed they would be on the internet as well. I have never visited one of their centres but know from their library indexes that there is a wealth of information in their vaults apart from the PRs & census data. Anything that points me in the right direction for finding family information can only be a good thing, it just seems such an age to wait & patience never was one of my virtues.:(

You should also remember that some of the parish register transcripts and other indexes in their vaults are the work of local family history societies and the permission of those societies must be given before the material can be digitised and put onto the internet. With most Societies those indexes represnt a source of income that keeps the membership fees at a respectable level so they will be reluctant to allow free access to the information their members toiled so long to produce. If the revenue drops then membership fees will have to rise so that the society can continue to give help and advice to their members. I know this because the LDS have already asked one of the societies I belong to if they can digitise the parish register transcripts.
