Hiya

I am trying to find the line in my tree for the Thorntons.
I really havent got alot of dates just names.
I will put what I have got and keep my fingers crossed that someone is brave enough to help me lol.

My granddad I believe would have been born 1925-30. His name
DENNIS THORNTON
Brothers Norman, I believe may have passed.
Ken/Kenneth.
Elizebeth married a Cartmel and she passed away last year.

Their parents names were Grace maiden name Whatson (not sure on spelling) and Ernest Thornton.

Ernest I believe had 3 brothers Edward, Herbert and Harry/Harold and a sister Ada.

Their parents names were Edward Thornton and not sure on first name, Ellen or Margaret but the surname was Cooper.

This is alls I have to go on with the Thornton side of things.
It seems the family stem from Saughall - Shotwick area.

Can anyone help PLEASE :)

a quick look on the 1901 census gives me only 3 Edward Thorntons in chesire

This one seems the most likely

Edward Thornton born abt 1864 in Sanghall, Cheshire, England /Head/ Great Saughall Cheshire

his wife is

Margaret Thornton/abt 1865/Sanghall/Wife/Great Saughall

Ernest is there

Ernest Thornton/abt 1895/Sanghall/Son/Great Saughall

as are Edward & Herbert

Edward Thornton/abt 1893/Sanghall/Son/Great Saughall

Herbert Thornton/abt 1897/Sanghall/Son/Great Saughall

This could be Harry (harry is often short for henry as well as harold)

Henry Thornton abt 1900/Sanghall/Son/Great Saughall

No Ada but two daughters

Edith Thornton abt 1891/Sanghall/Daughter/Great Saughall
Elinor M Thornton abt 1899/Sanghall/Daughter/Great Saughall

also a cooper!

William Cooper/abt 1861 /Sanghall/Boarder/Great Saughall

hope that helps

In 1891, William Cooper was again boarding with Edward and Margaret Thornton, and their daughter Edith:

Name: Cooper, William
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relation: Boarder
Gender: Male
Where Born: Gt Saughall, Cheshire
Birth Country: England

Civil parish: Great Saughall
Ecclesiastical parish: Shotwick
Town: Great Saughall
County/Island: Cheshire

Source information: RG12/2868
Registration district: Chester
Sub registration district: Chester Cathedral
ED, institution, or vessel: 27
Folio: 54
Page: 14

Perhaps he was Margaret's brother?

In 1881, 14-yr-old Margaret Cooper was a domestic servant in the home of a farmer and his family, named Nicholas, in Gr. Saughall. William was also a servant, but at The Green, Parkgate House in Shotwick, Gr. Saughall. Interestingly, there is a Thomas Cooper ( age 59) and his wife Kitty (62) and daughter Elizabeth (26) also living there. Thomas is a gameskeeper, and was born in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. The others were born in Gr. Saughall, Cheshire.

The 1871 census clearly shows William and Margaret as the children of Thomas Cooper (agricultural laborer, age 32, b: Gr, Saughall, Cheshire) and his wife Ann (age 33, b: Hope, Flintshire, Wales) and not of Thomas and Catherine (Kitty) Cooper, who are also listed on the same census living in Gr. Saughall. Other children of Thomas and Ann are Sarah (8) and Charles (2), both b: Gr. Saughall. There is also another Thomas Cooper living in Gr. Saughall: age 13, b: Shotwick, Cheshire, servant in the home of William Fairbrother and his wife Mary. He may possibly have been a brother to Margaret and William, as well...

In the 1861 census:

Name: Thomas Cooper
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1839
Relation: Son
Household: View other family members
Gender: Male
Where born: Gt Saughall, Cheshire, England

Civil parish: Shotwick
Town: Great Saughall
County/Island: Cheshire
Country: England

Source information: RG9/2633
Registration district: Great Boughton
Sub-registration district: Hawarden
ED, institution, or vessel: 2
Folio: 13
Page: 10

Other family:

George Cooper abt 1843 Gt Saughall, Cheshire, England Son Shotwick Cheshire
Margaret Cooper abt 1848 Gt Saughall, Cheshire, England Daughter Shotwick Cheshire
Mary Cooper abt 1828 Hope, Flintshire, Wales Wife Shotwick Cheshire
Sarah Cooper abt 1859 Gt Saughall, Cheshire, England Daughter Shotwick Cheshire
Thomas Cooper abt 1858 Gt Saughall, Cheshire, England Grandson Shotwick Cheshire
William Cooper abt 1817 Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales Head Shotwick Cheshire

Missing is Thomas' wife Ann, and it is not clear if Sarah is also a grandchild instead of a child. On the original it is unclear if Thomas is listed as married or unmarried.

From UKBMD:

Marriage index for 1925 -
THORNTON, Ernest m: WATSON, Grace Lilian in: Chester, Civil Marriage, register at: Cheshire West, Reference no. ROC/74/143.

You should send for this, as if will give her father's name, as well as the exact date of marriage.

Also, index for 1886-1890 -
THORNTON, Edward m: COOPER, Margaret in: Shotwick, St Michael, register at: Cheshire West, Reference no. CE41/1/142. (FreeBMD clarifies this as Dec qtr, 1889 - Chester, Vol. 8a, Pg. 639)

Ann's maiden name (married to Thomas Cooper) may have been Simons, as I found an entry for marriage between Thomas Cooper and either Ann Simons or Ellen Kenyon in Dec qtr 1858 in Gt. Boughton, which spanned Cheshire and Flintshire (vol 8a pg 582). If the Thomas listed as a grandchild in 1861 was Thomas and Ann's son, the birth would coincide with the marriage...

Although I also found the marriage of a Thomas Cooper and Hannah (Ann?) Inglefield in Flintshire in 1860 on the North Wales BMD site.

By the way, the chances of William Cooper's wife Mary being the mother of Thomas (married to Ann) is remote at best (check the ages on the 1861 census!). It's much more likely that this was a second marriage for William and that Thomas' mother was the first wife... so went looking and found this for 1839, the year Thomas was likely born:

COOPER, William m: ROBERTS, Sarah in: Shotwick, St Michael, Records at: Cheshire West, Reference No. CE41/1/5 (FreeBMD gives: Mar qtr 1839, Gt. Boughton, Vol. 19, Pg. 53 for the GRO index). And the death of a Sarah Cooper was recorded in Gt. Boughton in Mar Qtr 1853 (vol 8a pg 304). It's possible he married Mary after this date.
